Take the Via Appia - Regina Viarum - , the Queen of All Highways,
or Via Cassia, Via Aurelia - each opening up distant lands. The
Via Appia, for instance, was Rome’s effective gateway to
the East, the Aurelia hugging the coast northwards making for
rapid communication with France and Spain.
